Leaders Online: A TADA court in Rajasthan's Ajmer on Thursday acquitted Lashkar-e-Toiba's chief bomb maker Abdul Karim Tunda in the 1993 blast case. The TADA court acquitted him for lack of evidence. Meanwhile, the court has convicted the two accused Aminuddin and Irfan in this case and sentenced them to life imprisonment. “The court has acquitted Abdul Karim Tunda of all charges. The CBI has failed to produce any solid evidence against Abdul Karim Tunda,” said Tunda's lawyer Shafiqtullah Sultani. Meanwhile (1993 Serial Bomb Blast Case), the CBI is likely to approach the Supreme Court to challenge Tunda's acquittal.
After the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya in 1993, there were serial bomb blasts in some railway trains of Mumbai, Lucknow, Kanpur, Hyderabad and Surat. Two people were killed and many were injured. A few months after the Mumbai bombings, there were explosions in trains passing through Kota, Kanpur, Secunderabad and Surat. The country was shaken by these serial bomb blasts. Under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, all cases from different places were consolidated and heard by a special court. Central agency CBI was responsible for investigating the case.
The case was pending in the Tada Court of Ajmer. Terrorists Abdul Karim alias Tunda, Irfan and Aminuddin are facing serious charges in this case. Abdul Karim was arrested in 2013 at the Nepal border. Tunda is lodged in Ajmer Jail.
The CBI had named Tunda as the mastermind behind the serial blasts case. He was arrested in 2013 from Nepal border. Tunda has pending cases in terrorism cases in various places in the country. Tunda is accused of training youths to carry out terrorist activities in India. Along with Pakistani national Junaid, he had planned a terrorist attack during Ganeshotsav in 1998.
Known as “Dr Bomb”, who is Tunda?
Tunda along with Jalis Ansari founded the organization 'Tanjim Islah-ul-Muslimeen' with the aim of working for the Muslim community in Mumbai. Born into a poor family in Chhattalal Mian area of Daryaganj in central Delhi, Tunda initially worked as a carpenter in his native village in Bazar Khurd area of Pilkhua village in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. Tunda's father used to work in smelting metals like copper, zinc and aluminum for livelihood. After his father's death, Tunda started a scrap business. He also ran a clothing business before becoming a radical jihadist terrorist. In the 80s, he came in contact with Lashkar-e-Taiba through the Pakistani intelligence agency ISI.
Tunda is currently 84 years old. He is serving a life sentence. He is an accused in several other bomb blast cases. Tunda, known to be close to terrorist Dawood Ibrahim, is known as “Dr Bomb” for his bomb-making skills. (1993 Serial Bomb Blast Case)
Third marriage at the age of 65 to an 18-year-old girl
Tunda married three times. At the age of 65, he was married for the third time to an 18-year-old girl. Tunda's younger brother Abdul Malik still works as a carpenter. Tunda, who escaped from India to Bangladesh in 1992, trained terrorists in Bangladesh and later in Pakistan to make bombs.
