18 OTT platforms showing obscene content banned: Government also blocked 19 websites, 10 apps and 57 social media handles

The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has banned 18 OTT platforms broadcasting obscene content. Along with these platforms, the government has also banned 19 websites, 10 apps and 57 social media handles related to it.

The ministry released the information
Issuing a statement, the Ministry informed that all these blocked OTT platforms used to broadcast obscene, indecent and derogatory content towards women. These platforms have been banned by taking action under Section 67 and 67A of the IT Act, Section 292 of the IPC and Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986.

The government has also shared the list of names of those platforms which were banned.

Warnings were given many times before
Earlier, these OTT apps were warned several times but the platform did not make any improvements in its content. Subsequently, on March 12, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur announced that 18 OTT platforms presenting obscene content had been removed.

More than 1 crore downloads, more than 32 lakh followers
One of these banned OTT apps has received more than 1 crore downloads. While two other apps got more than 50 lakh downloads on Google Play Store. Apart from this, these OTT platforms also used social media extensively to attract audiences to their websites and apps. There was a total following of more than 32 lakh users on these social media accounts.
