Bhatt was convicted in the 28-year-old case by a district court at Palanpur in Banaskantha on Wednesday (March 27). Earlier this month, the Gujarat High Court had also sentenced Bhatt to life imprisonment in the alleged custody case.
What exactly is the case?
Sanjeev Bhatt was working as Superintendent of Police (SP) of Banaskantha District from 13 October 1995 to 18 October 1996. In 1996, allegedly on Bhatt's instructions, police inspector Indravadan Vyas raided a hotel in Palanpur and seized 1.15 kg of opium from a hotel room. Lawyer Sumersinh Rajpurohit was arrested in this case. In October 1996, Rajpurohit filed a complaint with the magistrate. The complaint filed alleged that Bhatt, Vyas and several others cheated him by keeping opium in his room.
