BJP MP Bhartrihari Mahtab took oath as the in-charge Speaker of the Lok Sabha on Monday (24th).
Leader Online Desk: Bhartrihari Mahtab, a senior BJP MP from Odisha's Cuttack Lok Sabha constituency, took oath as the in-charge Lok Sabha Speaker (Protem Speaker) of the 18th Lok Sabha on Monday (24th). He was administered the oath by President Draupadi Murmu. After that, Mahtab presided over the Lok Sabha session starting today.
Ahead of the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha (Parliament Session 2024), BJP MP Bhartrihari Mahtab took oath as the Speaker-in-charge of the Lok Sabha on Monday despite strong opposition from the opposition. The Lok Sabha session began at 11 am in the Parliament House under the chairmanship of Mahtab. He first took oath as a member of the Lok Sabha to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Then other members took oath.
Meanwhile, Mahtab's selection has been criticized by opponents. Congress in particular strongly objected to it. The Congress had demanded that Kodikunneel Suresh, who had been an MP in the Lok Sabha for the last time, should be elected as the acting Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
The session of Parliament started today from Monday. The NDA government will be tested in the very first session of the 18th Lok Sabha. Opposition is gearing up to derail the government over Lok Sabha Speaker election; So NDA will try to show its strength through this medium. Apart from this, there are signs of fighting between the opposition parties and the ruling party on many issues. The session will continue till July 3.
Who are Bhartrihari Mahatab?
Bhartrihari Mahtab is a Member of Parliament from Cuttack Lok Sabha constituency in Odisha. He is known as a prominent leader in Odisha politics. Mahtab had joined the BJP in March before the Lok Sabha elections. Before that he was in Biju Janata Dal. In 2017, he was honored with the Parliamentarian Award for his outstanding performance in the Lok Sabha.
