Leaders Online Desk: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUIF) chief leader Noor Islam Nizami was shot dead by unidentified assailants in North Waziristan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The incident took place near a market in Miranshah on Tuesday. The local police has informed about this by posting X.
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam is a Deobandi political party in Pakistan. It was established in 1945. But in 1988 it broke up. But the then President of Pakistan, Zia-ul-Haq, supported Mujahideen organizations during the Afghanistan War, which led to dissension in the JUI and split into two factions. JUIF emerged as the largest group of original JUIs. 'F' is used for the name Fazl-ur-Rahman.
JUIF was known as the largest religio-political party in Pakistan till 2021. The party's strength lies mainly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and northern Balochistan, which are mainly populated by Pashtuns.
Another faction, the JUI-S, led by Samiul Haq, is important in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Additional splinter groups include Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Nazirati (JUI-N), which split in 2007 but reunited with JUI-F in 2016. While officially registered with the Election Commission of Pakistan as Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, the party is commonly referred to as Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F).
