Leaders Online: As many as 11 earthquakes shook New York City and surrounding areas in America. The earthquake on Friday had a magnitude of 4.8. The earthquake shook buildings on the east coast. Then at 5.59 local time, another earthquake of magnitude 4 occurred in New Jersey. According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), the epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 9 kilometers underground.
A 4.8 magnitude earthquake was reported in New Jersey on Friday morning. Residents of nearby states and residents of New York City felt the tremors. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the magnitude 4.8 earthquake was the third largest recorded in the area in the past five decades and the largest in New Jersey in more than 240 years.
The earthquake was reported 5 miles north of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey at 10:23 a.m. Friday. The epicenter of the earthquake was about 45 miles from New York City. Residents have reported shaking furniture and floors.
An hour after the initial shock, a magnitude 2 aftershock hit Bedminster, west of New Jersey. At 12.30 pm there was a shock of magnitude 1.8, at 1.14 pm it was magnitude 2. Also, shortly before 3 o'clock, another 2-magnitude shock was reported by the USGS.
Although the tremors did not cause major damage, engineering teams are inspecting roads and bridges.

Another earthquake of magnitude 4.0 struck New Jersey at 17.59 local time. The quake was at a depth of 9 kilometers as per the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC).
