Earlier, he has also contested as an independent from Varanasi constituency. Now for the third time in a row, he is contesting elections from Congress against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This time, Narendra Modi, who contested the election for the first time from Varanasi, defeated Aam Aadmi Party's Arvind Kejriwal by more than 3.71 lakh votes.

2004 Lok Sabha won by Congress, but candidate today in BJP

In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections before Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior BJP leader Dr. It was won by Murali Manohar Joshi. After 1984, the Congress won the Varanasi seat only once in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections. Congress candidate Rajesh Kumar Mishra was elected as MP this time. The difference in this Lok Sabha election is that since Ajay Rai of Congress is the India Aghadi candidate in Varanasi constituency, he is also supported by Samajwadi Party.
