Leaders Online Desk: The Indian stock market created another history on Tuesday (21st). The market capitalization of listed companies on the BSE crossed the record $5 trillion mark for the first time. Notably, the total market capitalization has increased by $633 billion since the beginning of the year.
The total market capitalization of all BSE listed companies has reached $5 trillion or about 416.46 trillion. While the Sensex index currently remains 1.66 percent below its all-time high, the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices hit new highs.
The journey of market capital
In November 2023, the total market capitalization of BSE listed companies reached $4 trillion. Now it has crossed 5 trillion dollars in just six months. The market capitalization of BSE-listed companies crossed the $1 trillion mark in May 2007. It then doubled in a decade to $2 trillion in July 2017 and reached $3 trillion in market capitalization in May 2021.
China stock market capitalization declines
Currently, only four stock markets in the world are in the $5 trillion plus club. These include markets in the US, China, Japan and Hong Kong. The US stock market leads the way with a market capitalization of nearly $55.65 trillion. It is followed by China ($9.4 trillion), Japan ($6.42 trillion) and Hong Kong ($5.47 trillion). According to Bloomberg, India's stock market capitalization has grown nearly 12 percent so far in 2024. While the market capitalization of America has increased by 10 percent. Hong Kong's capital is up 16 percent. While the market capitalization of China and Japan has remained stable. China's market capitalization fell 1.4 percent. Japan's capital has grown by only 3 percent.
