ICC T20 WC : England's first win in Super 8 round; West Indies lost









Leader Online Desk: In the Super 8 round match held today (20th) morning, England won by 8 wickets against West Indies. England strengthened their claim to the semi-finals by defeating the West Indies at the Darren Semi National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia. Batting first after losing the toss, West Indies scored 180 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in 20 overs. In reply, England scored 181 for 2 in 17.3 overs and won the match by eight wickets.

Strong innings from Salt and Bairstow

Chasing a target of 181 runs, England started the innings strongly. Phil Salt and Jos Buttler shared a partnership of 67 runs for the first wicket. Roston Chase dismissed Buttler lbw in the eighth over. He was dismissed for 25 off 22 balls. Another shock came to the team in the form of Moeen Ali. Russell caught Johnson Charleskar on the first ball of the 11th over. He could score only 13 runs. Jonny Bairstow took over after this. He shared an unbeaten partnership of 97 runs for the third wicket with Phil Salt.

In the 16th over of the innings, Salt hit Romario Shepherd for 30 runs, hitting fours and sixes in his over. Salt remained unbeaten on 87 runs while Bairstow remained unbeaten on 48 runs in this match. Only Russell and Chase took one wicket each from the West Indies.

Earlier, West Indies, who lost the toss, scored 181 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in 20 overs against England. Brendan King and Johnson Charles made a strong start in batting. However, King retired in the fifth over due to a thigh injury. He returned to the pavilion with 23 off 13 balls. After this, Nicholas Pooran took over. He shared a 54-run partnership with Charles for the first wicket which Moeen Ali smashed in the 12th over. He dismissed Charles. Opener Charles returned to the pavilion with 38 off 34 balls. After this, Rovman Powell, who came to bat at number four, batted brilliantly. He shared a 43-run partnership with Pooran for the second wicket. Liam Livingstone dismissed Powell in the 15th over. He managed to score 36 runs. At the same time, Puran scored 36 runs with the help of four fours and one six.

Russell could score only one run in the match. Meanwhile, Rutherford remained unbeaten on 28 and Romario Shepherd remained unbeaten on five. Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Moeen Ali and Livingstone took one wicket each for England.
