Haj pilgrims: Severe heat wave in Makkah, 550 Haj pilgrims died due to heatstroke









Leader Online Desk: A heat wave has spread in the Gulf country of Saudi Arabia. 550 Haj pilgrims have died due to heat. Among the dead are 323 Egyptian citizens. These figures came from the morgue of Al-Muassam hospital in Makkah.

The Saudi Meteorological Department has said that climate change is affecting the pilgrimage. The average temperature there is increasing by 0.4 degrees Celsius. On Monday, the temperature in the Grand Mosque in Mecca reached 51.8 degrees Celsius. About 60 Jordanians have also died, according to diplomats. Amman officially recorded 41 deaths on Tuesday. The total number of deaths reported by several countries has reached 577 so far, AFP reports. Al-Mu'assam, one of the largest morgues in Makkah, recorded a total of 550 deaths. Saudi officials have said that more than 2,000 pilgrims suffering from heatstroke are being treated. Meanwhile, 240 Hajj pilgrims from different countries died last year too. Among them, the number of Indonesian citizens was high.
