Leader Online Desk: Gyanesh Kumar Gupta and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu have become the new Election Commissioners. The names of Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu were decided in a high-level committee meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary, member of the committee and Congress leader in the Lok Sabha, said after the meeting, “The selection committee had submitted six names. These included the names of Utpal Kumar Singh, Pradeep Kumar Tripathi, Dyanesh Kumar, Indiwar Pandey, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Gangadhar Rahat. Dyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu were elected as Election Commissioners. So Dyanesh Kumar is currently trending on social media.

Who is Dyanesh Kumar?

Dyanesh Kumar is a retired IAS officer of Kerala cadre. He is a native of Kerala and a 1988 batch IAS officer. Dyanesh was in-charge of the Kashmir department in the Union Home Ministry. It was during his tenure that the central government took a historic decision to abrogate Article 370 of the Constitution from Jammu and Kashmir.

Working with Amit Shah

Dyanesh Kumar took charge as the Secretary of the Ministry of Cooperatives in May 2022. He was appointed in the Ministry of Cooperation in place of Devendra Kumar Singh. He worked with Amit Shah while holding the post of Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs and later in the Ministry of Cooperation. Then Dyanesh Kumar retired on 31 January 2024.
