Recently, actor Aditya Seal's film 'Amar Prem Ki Prem Kahani' has been released on the OTT platform. This film is about the love story of two men. During a conversation with Dainik Bhaskar, Aditya shared his views about the script, preparation for his character and the responsibility of working on this sensitive topic. Read some key excerpts from the conversation:
What was your first reaction when you got the script?
When I got the script of this film, I found it very interesting. This film is about the love story of two men. Films have been made on such subjects before, but the specialty of this film is that we are normalizing it. Usually it is shown in films that family members or society do not accept, but here the story starts from the place where everyone has accepted. The story after this is worth watching. In this, the light-hearted conflict between Bengali and Punjabi marriage has been presented in a fun manner. I thought that if there was a female character in it, it would not have much impact on the story. That's why this script felt fresh and different for me.
What kind of preparation did you do for this role?
There was no special preparation for this role. I just had to convince my mind to treat it like a regular love story. There was some hesitation in the beginning, but within a few days everything became normal. In fact, if there was a female character, there would have been the same hesitation, but then everything seemed fine.
This is a sensitive topic. Did you feel challenged or responsible?
Absolutely. When I was reading the script, I was always mindful that we should not hurt anyone. It was especially important to show that the people of the community are not special. Many of my friends are from this community, so it was very important for me that no one said that I showed anything wrong. My fear was always that my friends would tell me that I did wrong. I took care to present the story in such a way that people who could not understand it could understand.
How did your friends react after watching the film?
Leave your friends, because they are biased. But I was very happy to see the messages that came from other people. I didn't expect so many reactions. I liked this very much. Even now messages are coming on my Instagram and people are saying thank you that we made such a film. A gentleman wrote that after watching the film, he told his family his truth, and his brother happily accepted him. This statement of his touched my heart. This was motivation for me.
This is the biggest victory that you can show your real self to the world. I am happy that my film brought a change in someone's life. I thanked the gentleman and took a screenshot because it meant a lot to me. Many of my friends are from the LGBTQ community, I have never discriminated. Yes, but it took me time to understand that some people in the society do not understand such relationships. Everyone has their own story, and we should respect their feelings.
