acute food crisis affecting a third of the world's population; United Nations report

New Delhi, Leading News Service: One third of the world's population is facing a food crisis, according to a United Nations global report. According to a recently released report, 281.6 million people faced food insecurity in 2023. Currently 59 countries are facing food crisis. The report says climate, migration and war are responsible for the crisis.

Weather is the main reason behind the food crisis and in 18 countries adverse weather conditions have led to this serious situation. About 72 million people have been affected. Due to the influence of El Niño, drought conditions were created in many countries. As a result, the production has decreased and people are not getting food to eat, the report has revealed the reality. Large-scale population migration and warlike conditions are the main reasons for food shortages.

According to the UN report, Sudan and the Gaza Strip have been most affected by the food crisis. War has created a state of displacement. A third of Sudan's population is in need of emergency food supplies. The wildness of the armed conflict that started in the last one year in the African country has now reached the South-Eastern countries. The situation has become so dire that one out of every five people needs to be provided with food.

Women and children have been found to be most affected by hunger and malnutrition. 36 countries of the world are facing chronic food crisis. Comparing the years 2022 and 2023, the food situation in 17 countries has improved. 7.2 million people in these countries face severe food insecurity, the report said.
