The family drama 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham', released in 2001, was one of the most expensive films of its time. Artists like Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor were seen together in this film. This film was directed by Karan Johar and his father Yash Johar was its producer.
Initially the budget of the film was 24.50 crores
Now in an interview given to Film Companion, Nikhil Advani, who was the assistant director of the film, shared some stories related to it. Nikhil told that when this film was proposed to producer Yash Johar, its budget was Rs 24.50 crore, but by the time this film was made, its budget had reached Rs 54.50 crore.
Artists like Shahrukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor, Jaya Bachchan and Kajol were seen together in the multi-starrer film 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham'.
The song 'Bole Chudiyan' was shot on the first day
Nikhil further said- 'After listening to the budget, Yash ji wrote something on a paper. He folded it and put it in his pocket and said – Okay, go make a film. In the year 2000, making a film with a budget of Rs 24.5 crore was a big deal. Well, we started shooting and shot the song 'Bole Chudiyan' on the first day with the entire star cast, 200 dancers and 300 junior artistes.
All 10 floors of Filmistan Studio have been booked.
Nikhil further said- 'We had set up the set in Filmistan Studio. At that time there were 10 floors in the studio and all of them were hired by Dharma Productions. In such a situation, for some days Filmistan Studio had become Dharma Studio.
Yash Johar's office was on one floor, HOD's office was on another and we had booked one floor only for eating. We painted the make-up room there, rebuilt the bathrooms, arranged for fridge, cable, TV, everything.
The song 'Bole Chudiyan' was shot on the first day on the sets of the film with the entire star cast, 200 dancers and 300 junior artistes.
The film was overbudgeted by Rs 30 crores.
Nikhil further said in the interview, 'After this, one day Yash ji met me outside the set. He asked me if I remember how much budget we had finalized for the film? I told Yash ji that there is a lot of stress on the set and I have to check a lot of things, so I don't remember.
Yash ji again took out that paper in front of me and he said – 'We had finalized the art budget of Rs 3 crore for the entire film and you have spent Rs 3 crore 60 lakh on this one set.'
After this Yash ji tore that paper and said – Now go and make this film. Finally this film was made with a budget of Rs 54 crore 50 lakh. This was Rs 30 crore more than the finalized budget.

Nikhil also told in this interview that not only the cost of production, there was a lot of struggle during the release of this film also. Nikhil told that the deal of this film could not be finalized at the last moment with a big studio.
After this Yash ji also talked to one of his trusted close ones. He said, 'I don't have money. I spent a lot of money and I need your help.
However, that associate also did not lend a helping hand to release the film. Later Yash Johar himself distributed this film at 17.5% refundable commission.

'K3G' was the highest grossing film of the year
The film 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham', released in 2001, had earned Rs 135 crore 53 lakh worldwide. It was the highest grossing film that year. After this, 'Gadar: Ek Prem Katha' was at second place in this list with a collection of Rs 133 crore and 'Lagaan' was at third place with a collection of Rs 65 crore.
