Sonam Khan started her career with Yash Chopra's film Vijay. Rishi Kapoor was also seen with her in this 1988 film. Sonam was active in the film industry from 1988 to 1994. After this, she decided to quit acting. She wanted to marry director Rajiv Rai at the age of 18.
However, Yash Chopra did not agree with this decision at all. He even forbade Sonam from getting married at a young age. He said that Sonam should not put her career at stake for marriage. However, Sonam did not listen to him.
Yash Chopra had forbidden me from getting married
Sonam mentioned this incident in an interview given to News 18 show. She said- Before marriage, I was offered a film with Salman Khan. Yash Chopra also offered me the film Aaina, in which Amrita Singh later worked.
When I told Yash Chopra that I cannot do this film, he said – you should not get married, you are making a mistake by doing this.
I did not listen to him, though.
Became a mother at the age of 21
Sonam told that she had quit working at the age of 17. She got married at the age of 18 and became the mother of her first child at the age of 21.
Sonam said- one should not stop working because of marriage
Sonam also expressed her opinion on whether she regrets leaving her career at a young age or not. She said- Yes, I regretted it. No woman should quit working, no matter what. Even if she is getting married to a billionaire, a woman should not quit working.
Sonam married Rajiv Rai in 1991. After 3 years of marriage, both became parents of son Gaurav. However, their marriage broke after 25 years. Sonam is now ready to make a comeback in Bollywood.
