The first match of this season will be between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Dhoni and Kohli have been playing in the league since the inception of IPL. While on one hand the fans are eagerly waiting for the rivalry between the two legends, on the other hand Kohli met Dhoni during practice before the match in Chennai. In a video posted on the official social media handle of the RCB franchise, Kohli said that it has been a long time since he met Dhoni. He further said, “I feel good playing in a stadium full of CSK fans.” Especially at CSK's home ground Chepauk Stadium. The atmosphere on the ground is completely different between Chennai and Bangalore matches.

The schedule of this year's competition will be announced in two phases in the background of the general elections taking place in the country. The schedule for the first phase of the tournament has been announced and a total of 21 matches will be played till April 7. The schedule for the second phase will be announced soon. In 2009 and 2014, the tournament was played abroad due to Lok Sabha elections in the country; But in 2019 and this year this competition is being held in the country itself.
