When legendary singer Udit Narayan dreamed of becoming a singer in his childhood, his father felt that a farmer's son could not become a singer. His father Harekrishna Jha wanted him to do farming or think of becoming a doctor and engineer. Udit Narayan's mother Bhuvaneshwari Devi is a folk singer. He believed in his son that one day his son would become a great singer.

Today Udit Narayan has sung 25 thousand songs in 40 different languages. Even today at the age of 69, there is the same freshness in his voice. Udit says that my mother is 106 years old. Even today she keeps singing at home. I always feel inspired after listening to his singing.

Today Udit Narayan is celebrating his 69th birthday. On this occasion, he had a special conversation with Dainik Bhaskar. Know what he said during the conversation, in his own words…

Learned singing by listening to songs on radio

I used to listen to the songs of Lata Mangeshkar, Rafi Sahab and Kishore Kumar on radio. At that time, radio used to be in the house of the village head or some big man only. I learned singing by listening to songs on the radio from a distance. My mother used to sing in the village houses. I got the inspiration to sing from him only.

Father wanted to become a doctor or engineer

My father was very angry with my singing. He used to say that after studying, become a doctor and engineer. You are a farmer's son. It is not possible for a farmer's son to go to Mumbai and become a singer. Therefore it is useless to dream this. Amateur singing is a different thing, but where can a career be made in it?

Used to earn 4-5 rupees by singing in the fair.

I used to sing in small village fairs. My elder brother Digambar Jha used to carry me on his shoulder across the river to the fair. I used to get 4-5 rupees. One could get a lot of happiness for this much money. He used to sing even when there was a holiday in school. I studied till 10th from Bihar, but there was no way I could understand what to do in life.

Started with Nepal Radio

During that time, he went to sing at a minister's place. He was very impressed after listening to the song. He said that if you want to sing Maithili folk songs for Nepal Radio then I can recommend. After that I went to Kathmandu and joined radio. I also studied in class 12th there.

Used to sing on radio during the day. He used to study at night and also sing songs by going to five star hotels. From there I used to get some money, which was enough for living. In this way 7-8 years passed there.

I couldn't believe it when I got a chance with Rafi Sahab.

Came to Mumbai in 1978 and took classical music lessons from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan here. I had classes in the evening. During the day he used to go to meet all the music directors in their studios. I got my first opportunity to sing with legendary singer Mohammed Rafi Sahab in the film 'Unnis-Bees'. For me it was no less than a dream. I couldn't believe that I would get a chance to sing with someone I had been listening to since childhood.

It's my pleasure to sing with Lata Mangeshkar

After the film 'Unnis-Bees', I was not getting the songs I wanted. There was a lot of struggle from 1978 to 1988. During this period, I kept getting 2-4 line songs in films. After getting 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak', there was no looking back.

The number of songs I have sung with Lata Mangeshkar in my career. I don't think any singer of my generation would have sung that many songs. Got a chance to sing in many films like Darr, Dil To Pagal Hai, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Veer Zara. I consider this my good fortune.

It is said that a woman plays a big role in a man's success. His wife Deepa Narayan has made a huge contribution to Udit Narayan's career. On the birthday of Udit Narayan, his wife and singer Deepa Narayan talked to Dainik Bhaskar.

I wondered what Udit ji would be able to sing?

I was an air hostess. I was also fond of singing. I wanted to release a music album in Nepali. The music director introduced me to Udit ji. Didn't know him till that time. He was very thin. I thought he was so thin, how would he be able to sing? But when she sang, I was surprised to hear her voice. It proved to be a super hit album in Nepali language. After this, people from Nepal started recording albums in the voice of Aakar Udit ji and me.

Said one day I will keep it in my pocket

Udit ji had started liking me in his heart. One day people were staring at me during the recording. I thought why are you looking at me like this? One day he told me that he will keep you in his pocket. I didn't understand what you wanted to say? Then he said that I will keep you in my heart, I will love you. I thought that if you are a good person and a good singer then you should get married.

Udit ji left the job when he became stable.

I continued working even after marriage. There is no guarantee as to when the film line will be successful. I was thinking that Udit ji should first become stable and then leave the job. When 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak' became a hit and Udit ji's car took off, I left the job. During this time, son Aditya Narayan was born.

Udit ji often talked to me about leaving my job. The day was spent in serving Aditya and mother-in-law. Anyway, it was difficult to find time for the job. Still I told Udit ji to first buy a good flat and maintain some bank balance. After that I will leave the job.

Lived with 7-8 boys in one room

Before marriage, I had taken a small flat in Kalina Santa Cruz. After marriage, Udit ji shifted to the same flat with me. When Udit ji came to Mumbai, he lived as a paying guest in a room in Mahalaxmi with 9-10 boys. During his struggle he might have changed 7-8 houses. Our life started from a Kalina flat. That's why we have not sold that flat till date.

When he became a hero in Nepali film, he started getting offers in Hindi also.

When Udit ji was struggling for singing, he got a chance to act in a Nepali film 'Kusume Rumal'. In this film, I was offered the heroine and Udit ji was offered the hero. I did not act, but Udit ji did a film and that film became a super hit. However, Udit ji did not feel like acting. I was the one who encouraged him to act. Because there was great need of money at that time.

After this another Nepali film was done. In which he had a double role. Later, I started getting offers for acting in Hindi films too, but I felt that I should not step into two boats. If Udit ji wants to become a singer, then he should become there.

We were so busy that we didn't get a chance to eat.

It was God's grace that Udit ji became very busy after the film 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak'. At that time we used to record at least 8-10 songs a day. There were many shows also. Sometimes there was no time even to eat. She used to feed him with her own hands in the car itself. Even after being successful, Udit ji is as humble as he was before. Whatever I make with my own hands and give. Eat with great love. I also design their clothes.

Listening to mother's singing always inspires me.

The same freshness is visible in Udit Narayan's singing in the last 41 years. He gives the credit for this to his mother Bhuvaneshwari Devi. Recently, during an interview, Udit Narayan had said – My mother is 106 years old. Even today she keeps singing at home. I always feel inspired after listening to his singing. If she can sing at this age, why can't I? This thinking inspires me to sing better.
