Leader Online Desk: The Delhi High Court has dismissed Congress' pleas challenging the income tax department's reassessment process. The court had reserved its order on the petitions filed by the party against the tax revaluation proceedings initiated by the Income Tax authorities against the Congress for the financial years 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016. A bench of Justices Yashwant Verma and Purushendra Kumar Kaurav rejected the petition, which has once again disappointed the Congress ranks.
A bench of Justice Yashwant Verma and Justice Purushendra Kumar Kaurav had clarified in the previous hearing that there was no reason to interfere with the ITAT order.
What is the matter?
The Income Tax Department had on February 13 sent a notice to the Congress for recovery of arrears of Rs 105 crore. The department had also imposed a fine of 210 crores on the Congress. Along with this, bank accounts of Congress were also frozen. Congress had filed a petition against this action of the Income Tax Department, but this petition was rejected.
Congress opposes the revaluation process
The Congress has consistently opposed the Income Tax department's reassessment action. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge said that Lok Sabha elections have been announced and our bank account has been frozen. This means efforts are on to prevent us from contesting elections. This is yet another example of the destruction of democracy in the country.
