Recently, the Hema Committee report has revealed the cases of sexual harassment and casting couch happening in the Malayalam film industry. Talking to Dainik Bhaskar on this issue, actress Tanushree Dutta shared her ordeal. She raised questions on Nana Patekar's murder attempt and the male-dominated mindset of the South film industry.
Let us tell you, in 2018, under the #MeToo movement, Tanushree had accused Nana Patekar, choreographer Ganesh Acharya and director Vivek Agnihotri of sexual harassment.
'Such reports should be made on Bollywood too'
Initially, I did not understand what this report was. To be honest, I did not know about it. My first reaction was a little confusing. I thought that this report would also be like the Vishakha Committee. I had heard a lot about the Vishakha Committee, but its rules were not followed. After some time, its noise also subsided. So I thought that this report would also be similar. I could not understand that this report is about the working methods of the film industry.
Now I understand that this report tells the real state of the industry. This is a good thing. But I still don't understand why it took six-seven years to be made? Situations keep changing every day. Such reports should come quickly. Still, I am happy that this report has been made.
I want a report on Bollywood as well. When people get the right information, they can prepare themselves before entering the industry. When the government and people know about things, the right action can be taken. From this perspective, I appreciate this report. It took me two-three days to understand it, but if everything is explained correctly in it and it is well researched, then the government should take action on it.
'The South is a male-dominated industry'
The South film industry is a male-dominated industry. I saw some scenes from their films and I was shocked. In one scene, a song was playing and the hero was pinching the girl. I thought, is this being shown in films? Such molestation and rape scenes are rarely shown in Bollywood now. But such scenes still happen in South films. These heroes and heroines are becoming pan-India stars, they should refuse to do such scenes. If such big heroes refuse, then that scene will not be made.
In the South, no matter how much popularity their content is getting, their thinking is still old. The artists there should not do such scenes. If they refuse, then such scenes will stop being made. I hope that after watching this interview, some people from the South will think about it.
'People like Nana Patekar are very violent'
People like Nana Patekar and what happened to the victim in Kolkata, their thinking is very violent. These people can do anything. People like Nana Patekar can even get someone murdered. They harassed me a lot. After this movement, many types of torture were done against me. Goons were sent to scare me, an attempt was made to cause an accident to me and an attempt was made to mix something in the food and drinks of my house through the maid, due to which my health deteriorated. My emails were hacked and false rumors were spread about me. The purpose of all this was to scare and break me, so that I shut my voice. But I did not give up and will not give up in future also. This fight will continue, because I know that these people are trying to silence me, but I will always stand for my truth.
'Harsh There should be a law
Yes, I have definitely seen some changes after the #Metoo movement. Earlier, the small predators who used to harass girls have become more cautious now. Now they are afraid that the girl might be recording it and the matter might reach the police. But the big predators, who have more power, still have their ego. The law will have to be strict for them and they should be punished. The minds of those who commit such crimes have become corrupt. They have no fear of their consequences. Therefore, strict laws should be made for them.
