Supreme Court relief to Congress from income tax recovery of 1700 crore | leader

New Delhi, Leading News Service: The Supreme Court on Monday clarified that no action will be taken by the Income Tax Department till the Lok Sabha elections for the recovery of Rs 1700 crore from the Congress party. Therefore, Congress will get to use the amount in their bank account and this is considered as a big relief for Congress in the background of Lok Sabha elections.

The Income Tax Department had filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the Congress for the recovery of Rs 135 crore. Advocate General Tushar Mehta appeared on behalf of the Income Tax Department in the hearing of this petition. During the Lok Sabha elections, the Income Tax Department does not want any political party to face difficulties in spending the election, Adv. Mehta told the court. Therefore, there is no problem if the hearing of this case is postponed till the election, he said in his argument. Justice B. V. Nagaratna's bench adjourned the hearing of the case till July 24. Congress had approached the Supreme Court to get permission to spend Rs 135 crore from the bank account during the election period. However, even if the Congress party spends 1700 crore rupees from its bank account during the election, the Income Tax Department will not have any objection to it, Adv. Mehta explained in his argument. Congress lawyer Adv. After Abhishek Manu Singhvi accepted this position of the Income Tax Department, the Supreme Court adjourned the hearing of the case till July 24. The party has welcomed this decision of the Supreme Court as the Congress will get to use the money from the bank account. The BJP has also expressed satisfaction that the Congress cannot be accused of misusing the system over the income tax department's recovery.
