Famous lyricist Javed Akhtar was once famous for his drinking habit. Javed himself has told in an interview that he used to finish a bottle of alcohol every day. Now Shabana Azmi, while talking about his addiction, has told that it was very difficult to live with his alcohol addiction. The actress has told that once Javed Akhtar was smelling strongly of alcohol, after which he decided to quit alcohol and since then he has not even touched it.
Recently, veteran actress Shabana Azmi appeared on Arbaaz Khan's chat show The Invincible with Arbaaz Khan. In the chat show, Arbaaz Khan asked her that there was a time when Javed Akhtar used to drink heavily, how difficult was it for you to live with him. On this, the actress said, it was very difficult for me. One day he decided that if he continued drinking like this, he would not be able to live for long and would not be able to do creative work.
The actress has told about Javed Akhtar quitting drinking that one day both of them were in their London flat. That day Javed sahab had drunk a lot, due to which he was stinking of alcohol. When Shabana gave him a bad reaction, Javed sahab said to her in a low voice, make breakfast for me. Shabana Azmi prepared breakfast for him and when he finished breakfast, he said softly, I will not drink alcohol after today.
Shabana did not say anything to him and then asked him what he meant by this. So the answer was, I am not going to drink alcohol anymore.
Shabana further said, he had never said this before. From that day till today he has not even touched alcohol. This was amazing. I can never have the will power that he has.
Javed Akhtar considers alcohol to be the reason for his failed first marriage
Let us tell you that Javed Akhtar has been drinking alcohol since the age of 21. Recently, in an interview given to Mojo Story, Javed Akhtar had said that alcohol was the reason for the breakdown of his first marriage. He had said, I started drinking at the age of 20-21 and quit drinking at the age of 42. At that time, I used to buy a bottle of alcohol and finish the whole bottle every night. This was a common thing for an Urdu poet. People used to believe that an Urdu poet has to remain care free and drink alcohol. I think this was wrong.

He further said, I am sure that if I was not an alcoholic and had fulfilled my responsibilities properly, things would have been different. The struggle to quit drinking is the reason for my failed relationship. She (Honey Irani) is a wonderful person. She is a good person and I respect her a lot. Javed Akhtar also told that he used to drink alcohol every day even after marrying Shabana Azmi. But one day he realized that if he kept drinking like this, he would die soon. With this thought in mind, one day he decided to quit drinking completely and since then he has never drunk even a drop of alcohol. Let us tell you that after divorcing Honey Irani, Javed Akhtar married Shabana Azmi in 1984.
