Sedition Case | Bail granted to Sharjeel Imam in 2020 riots case

Leaders Online Desk: Delhi High Court has granted bail to Sharjeel Imam in the sedition case. He had sought statutory bail since January 2020. He is also an accused in the Delhi riots conspiracy case. JNU student Sharjeel Imam was accused of involvement in the 2020 riots case and illegal activities.

A bench of Justice Suresh Kumar Kait and Justice Manoj Jain granted the bail. Sharjeel Imam was arrested under sedition and UAPA charges for making inflammatory speeches in Delhi's Jamia area and Aligarh Muslim University during the Delhi riots.

Imam was denied bail by the trial court. He had challenged the order of the trial court. He claimed that the trial court had denied him bail even though he had served more than half of the maximum sentence he could have been awarded if convicted.
