The film is based on the Godhra incident that took place in Gujarat in 2002. The film 'The Sabarmati Report' is based on the Godhra train fire that occurred on February 27, 2002 in Gujarat. Then bogie number S6 of Sabarmati Express parked near Godhra station was set on fire. 59 Hindu Kar Sevaks returning from Ayodhya were burnt alive. These included 27 women and 10 children.

Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat at that time. After the Godhra incident, riots broke out in Gujarat. According to government figures, 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus were killed in these riots. At that time there was BJP government at the centre. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister.
