PM Modi congratulated the new Prime Minister of Pakistan leader

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Congratulations to @CMShehbaz on being sworn in as Prime Minister of Pakistan.”

Pakistan voted on 8 February 2024. No single party got majority in the result. Ultimately after protracted negotiations, the PML-N and the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) won the most seats but agreed to form a coalition government. The election for the post of Prime Minister was held on Sunday, March 3. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Shehbaz Sharif was pitted against Imran Khan's PTI candidate Omar Ayub Khan.

There was a commotion during the voting in Parliament. Sharif got 201 votes while his rival Omar Ayub Khan of Imran Khan's 'PTI' party had to settle for 92 votes. Shehbaz Sharif is 72 years old. He is the brother of Nawaz Sharif, a three-time prime minister of Pakistan. He led the election campaign of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
