Leaders Online: The Supreme Court has asked Ayurvedic company Patanjali Ayurveda managing director Acharya Balkrishna and yoga guru Baba Ramdev to appear on the next date of hearing for not responding to the contempt notice. The court had earlier issued a contempt notice to Patanjali Ayurveda for continuing to publish misleading advertisements about medicinal treatments.
In contempt proceedings against Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna over misleading advertisements of Patanjali Ayurveda, the Supreme Court has directed the two to appear in court personally for not responding to the show cause notice.
On February 27, the Supreme Court had criticized Patanjali Ayurveda for misleading advertisements. The court also restrained the company from advertising the products as cures. The court had issued a notice to Patanjali Ayurveda and its managing director Acharya Balkrishna warning of possible contempt action for violating the court's directions.
A bench of Justices Hima Kohli and Ahsanuddin Amanullah had directed Patanjali Ayurveda and its executives not to issue any statement in print or electronic medium criticizing any system of medicine, as per the undertaking given on November 21 last year.
The bench questioned the government about the alleged false claims and misinformation in advertisements about the efficacy of Patanjali Ayurveda's medicines in treating various diseases, saying it was misleading the nation.
