Onion Export | Breaking! Union government lifted export ban on onion, but will it benefit the farmers?









Leaders Online Desk: The central government has lifted the ban on export of onion. A notification issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade said that USD 550 has been fixed as the minimum price for 1 metric ton onion export. There is a possibility of confusion as to whether this decision will benefit the onion farmers or not. (Onion Export) Because, on the one hand the onion export ban has been lifted, on the other hand The government on Friday imposed 40 percent duty on onion exports. Besides, import of indigenous chickpea has been exempted from duty till 31st March, 2025.

In August last year, India had imposed 40 percent export duty on onion till December 31, 2023. The central government had imposed an export ban to control the price of onion in the domestic market. Although this export ban has now been removed, on the other hand, heavy export duty has been imposed.
