Jawaharlal Nehru became the first Prime Minister of the country after independence. Jawaharlal Nehru took the reins of the country three times in a row. Pandit Nehru was the Prime Minister for about 17 years from 1947 to 1964. He served as Prime Minister for 16 years, 9 months, 13 days. He died on 27 May 1964.

Indira Gandhi held the post of Prime Minister four times

Indira Gandhi held the post of Prime Minister four times. She became the first Prime Minister after the death of Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1966. After winning the elections in 1967, he was sworn in as Prime Minister for the second time. In 1971, he took oath as the prime minister for the third consecutive time, continuing the tradition of victory. Indira Gandhi imposed Emergency in 1975. Hence, his tenure as Prime Minister, which ended in 1976, continued till 1977, i.e., the end of Emergency. In the 1980 elections, he again captured power. His final tenure was from 1980 to 1984.
