Name-matched persons cannot be barred from election; Supreme Court









New Delhi; News Agency: The Supreme Court expressed a clear opinion that we cannot prevent Rahul Gandhi or other candidates named Lalu Prasad Yadav from contesting the election due to the similarity of names of political leaders.

A petition was filed in the Supreme Court to bar the concerned candidates from contesting the election due to similarity of name. The petitioner had requested the court to give appropriate directions to the Election Commission in this regard. During the hearing on this, the court said that a candidate or a person cannot be prevented from contesting the election just because his name is similar to other political leaders. If a person's birth name is Rahul Gandhi or Lalu Prasad Yadav, how can they be prevented from contesting the election, will their rights not be affected if they are prevented from contesting the election, should they be prevented from contesting the election if a person like a political leader is given a name by his birth parents, the court dismissed the petition against Namasadharma.
