At 5 in the morning, farmer Muniraju left for work while walking on the road near Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. While walking, his eyes suddenly fell on the dead body of a woman lying on the shore. When I went closer, the scene was heart-wrenching. The head of the corpse was brutally crushed, due to which the brain was torn to pieces. The body was drenched in blood. There were many deep marks of being cut by sharp weapons, while the palms were also torn.
Farmer Muniraju called the Bengaluru Police and informed about the discovery of a woman's body. Seeing the branded clothes on the dead body, the police guessed that the woman might have belonged to a good family. Some bricks were found near the dead body, which had blood stains on them clearly indicating that his head might have been crushed with these. It was impossible to identify the dead body, so the police started investigation on the basis of the clothes of the dead body.
The mystery of this death remained very complicated for the police, because even after several attempts, their hands remained empty. However, due to a coincidence and the cleverness of the police, every layer of the murder case was revealed.
Today in 4 chapters of Ansuni Dastan, read the story of the murder case of Kolkata model Pooja Singh Dey-
A team of 20 policemen was formed for this high profile murder. The forensic team found at the crime scene that there were tire marks of a car at the spot where the body was found. After scanning the CCTV footage around the area, a white Swift car was seen passing by. However, the number plate of that car was not clearly visible in any of the footage.
The next angle of investigation was the clothes found in the dead body. The deceased woman was wearing branded jeans, T-shirt and expensive Titan watch. Usually, the identity of the buyer is established through billing of branded items.
More than 14 thousand people were interrogated to know their identity.
It was revealed that 14 thousand such jeans had been sold across the country. The numbers of buyers were extracted on the basis of billing. On the basis of size this number became 800. A WhatsApp group was created by taking out everyone's numbers, where pictures of the dead body were sent, but the results were zero.
After jeans, details of those who bought the Titan Watch were extracted on the basis of its model. Most of the 1400 buyer numbers were switched off. Everyone was called, groups were formed, pictures were sent, but no one came forward to buy that watch.
The postmortem report revealed that the woman was stabbed 22 times, due to which she died. There was an attack on the head with a heavy weapon, after which it was crushed. During the postmortem, the team noticed the tattoo of the letter 'S' on the body. Now the police interrogated the people named S who bought branded watches and jeans, but this trick also did not work.
The dead body was found near the airport, hence the police guessed that either the woman might have traveled here or she might have set out from here, but during the investigation no passenger was found who had missed her flight that day.
The police were trying to identify the unidentified body when an informer informed that the woman had been murdered by her husband. The man, who belonged to North India, had killed his wife and thrown her body near the airport. When the police went to North India on the basis of an informer and arrested the man, he confessed to the crime of murdering his wife. When he was asked to go to the crime scene and repeat the crime scene, he left with the police, but he took the police to a new place. That place was only a short distance away from where this unidentified body was found. The police were surprised. When the nearest police station was contacted, it was revealed that a dead body had indeed been found at that place a few days ago. The mystery of a murder was solved, but the police were still empty handed when an unidentified body was found.
Identification of a dead body found by chance
Usually any dead body is kept in the mortuary for 2-3 days, but this could not happen in this case. 10 days had passed since the body was found, but the police had no clue. Just a month before this case, Bengaluru Police Inspector B. Ramamurthy's team had arrested a thief Karthik from Kolkata. Gold worth Rs 50 lakh was found with him. Kolkata Police wanted Bengaluru Police to hand over the remand of that thief to Kolkata Police. In this regard, Kolkata Police made several calls to Inspector Ramamurthy in the last one month, but due to being busy in the murder of an unidentified dead body, he could not receive any call.
In August 2019, a call was made to Bengaluru Inspector Ramamurthy from New Model Town Police Station in Kolkata. That day he received the call in frustration. Both of them first talked about the issue, then Inspector Ramamurthy told the calling constable the valid reason for not picking up the call. He said that for the last 10 days he has been busy with the recovery of a dead body of a woman whose identity could not be found. Don't call them for a few days. When the matter came to light, he expressed his frustration at not being able to solve the case and started telling all the details.
As soon as he heard the details, the Kolkata Police constable told Ramamurthy to wait. He told that a missing complaint has been lodged in his police station a few days ago, in which a person named Sandeep Dey has told that his wife had gone to Bengaluru a few days ago, from where she went missing. This conversation, which started by chance, proved to be the first important link in this case.
The first letter of the name of the complainant Sandeep Dey was S. This tattoo was made on the dead body. Bengaluru Police directly sent photographs of the dead body to Kolkata Police. Sandeep Dey, a resident of Kolkata, recognized his wife from the clothes of the photograph.
Sandeep Dey identified the dead body and said that his wife's name is Pooja Singh Dey, who is a model by profession. She had gone to Bengaluru for an event some time ago and has been missing ever since.
Inspector Ramamurthy was about to leave for Kolkata when a person named Ali, a resident of Delhi, contacted Bengaluru Police. Ali told the police that the Titan watch whose pictures were being sent on WhatsApp was the watch he had given to his girlfriend some time ago. He told his girlfriend's name to be Pooja Dey. He confirmed Pooja's identity through photographs. As soon as the police identified the dead body, Ali from Delhi and Pooja's husband Sandeep from Kolkata and his family were called to Bengaluru for questioning.
According to the statement of Pooja's husband Sandeep Dey, they were married 7 years ago, although they did not have children. Pooja was a model by profession and was also doing event management work for some time. Pooja often traveled to Bangalore and Delhi for work. Sandeep Dey told that he was unaware of the relationship between Pooja and Ali.
When Pooja's family was interrogated, it came to light that their married life was not going well. There were often disagreements between Pooja and Sandeep. After the statement of the family, the police kept Sandeep under suspicion. Was it possible that Sandeep got information about the relationship between Pooja and Ali, due to which he got angry and killed his wife or got someone else to do it.
Pooja's boyfriend Ali told the police during interrogation that he had met Pooja during an event. While working together, both started liking each other. He also knew that Pooja was married, but this did not make any difference to their relationship. The police also had suspicion on Ali, but he was removed from the ambit of suspicion saying that he himself had contacted the police from the front. If he was a murderer, why would he come forward himself?
Checked-in to the hotel a day before death
Police started collecting evidence against Sandeep Dey. Also, inquiries started from Pooja's mobile number at those places where she had gone before her death. It was revealed that Pooja had reached Bengaluru from Kolkata by flight on 29 July 2019. She had booked a cab from the airport through the app, through which she reached Sahara Pavilion Hotel in Singasandra.
Police reached the hotel and saw CCTV footage, in which Pooja was seen checking-in on July 29. The hotel staff told them that Pooja had come to the hotel alone. On July 30, she had gone to a meeting after booking a cab online and returned. He checked out of the hotel at around 3:50 pm on the intervening night of 30-31 July. She had left for the airport in the same cab in which she had returned in the afternoon.
When the police searched the online cab booking app to confirm the information received from the hotel, no booking for late night of Pooja was found in it. In such a situation, the police's suspicion fell on the cab driver. Through the CCTV footage of the hotel, the police got complete information about that cab and the cab driver.
On August 23, 23 days after Pooja's body was found, the police arrested the cab driver from his house. The cab driver was identified as 22-year-old Nagesh. In the face of police strictness, Nagesh confessed to killing Pooja.
The cab driver had arrived late at night to pick up Pooja.
According to Nagesh's confession, on the afternoon of July 30, Pooja had booked a cab through an online app. He took them to the meeting and brought them back. Pooja told him that she had to go to the airport late at night, for which she would book a cab at night. Nagesh told him that instead of online booking, he should directly give him Rs 1200, he would come at the same time. Pooja carelessly agreed to his request. He arrived at the appointed time to pick up Pooja from the hotel. This was the reason why no Pooja booking was visible when I searched the app.
Nagesh told that Pooja's attire made her look like she belonged to a rich family. As soon as he saw them, Nagesh had made up his mind to rob them. Actually, Nagesh had bought the car on loan, but due to lack of money, the EMI of his car got bounced. He was in dire need of money. In such a situation, as soon as he saw Pooja, he decided to rob her.
He had left from the hotel towards the airport. It was late night, due to which Pooja Singh Dey was sleeping. The route was quite long. As soon as Pooja went into deep sleep, Nagesh stopped the car after seeing the deserted road. He first hit the sleeping Pooja on the head with an iron rod. Nagesh thought that Pooja had fainted. He started looting their belongings, during which Pooja regained consciousness. As soon as Pooja started screaming loudly in defense, Nagesh started stabbing her several times first on her waist and then on her stomach. Pooja died there due to bleeding. Nagesh ran away from there with their belongings.
Pooja had died a few minutes before farmer Muniraju saw her dead body at 5 am. Nagesh withdrew money from Pooja's e-wallet and gifted the items to his sister.
Nagesh did not get bail in this case for 2 years. After 2 years, on March 15, 2021, the police filed the charge sheet of the case. The trial against him was to begin in September, but before that he died of food poisoning in jail in September 2021.
