Mithun Chakraborty has been given the Dadasaheb Phalke Award at the 70th National Film Award Ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on 8 October. After receiving the proudest honor of the film industry, Mithun came on stage and gave an emotional speech. He told that in the beginning of his career, he had to listen to taunts because of his dark complexion, however, he decided to make a name for himself with his dance and was called a disco dancer across the country.
Mithun Chakraborty received his first National Award for his debut film Mrigya. On this he said, as soon as I received the first award, I started thinking that I am Al Pacino and I have done something amazing. My attitude had changed. I used to sit in the producers' office and collect money. The producer could not understand that I was acting as Al Pacino. One day I told a producer to send the script of the film to my house. On hearing this, the producer kicked me and said, get out of here. From that day I went from Al Pacino to yesterday's Pacino. I understood that I made a mistake, now no one will give me work.
People accepted me as an actor, but the biggest problem I had was my complexion. People used to say that this black color will not work in the film industry. What are you doing here, go back. When I used to go on the road, people used to call me Kalia and all that, which can be used to insult a person.
The actor further said, I started thinking what should I do. I used to ask God that God, you cannot change this color of mine. But God could not change that color. I started thinking what should I do? So I thought I can dance. If I can dance, I should dance with my feet in such a way that people look at my feet, not at my skin, not at my color. I did exactly that. Watch my films, I danced with my feet in all the films. Didn't let it stop. People forgot my color and I became sexy dusky Bengali babu.
I used to complain a lot to God, because in my life I did not get anything on a platter, I got it after a lot of struggle. So I used to say to God, you gave me name and fame, then why are you giving me so much trouble. Used to complain a lot. So one day I was thinking that maybe this would be the way, but it was not. After receiving this award today, I stopped complaining. I said thank you Bhole Nath, thank you Guru Shiv. Now I will not complain, because you have returned everything to me with interest.
