Manisha Koirala did not want to do director Mani Ratnam's film Bombay. She believed that her career would end after playing the role of a mother in the film. However, this decision was not supported by anyone close to him. Everyone said that she was crazy for doing this. He had no idea how big Mani Ratnam's status was in the field of direction. However, after people's persuasion, he agreed to the film.
Manisha herself has said all these things in a recent interview. These days he is in the news for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's series Heeramandi. Manisha was last seen in Kartik Aryan-starrer Shehzada.
Manisha was confused after getting the film offer
In an interview given to YouTube channel O2, Manisha said that at that time there was a perception that people get typecast after playing the role of a mother. He further said- I remember when I got the offer of the film Bombay. Before this, I had not seen the 1992 film Roja but had definitely heard its song. This was also a big hit.
When I was asked to do the film Bombay, I was a little confused. She was not very intelligent at that time. There was a norm in the industry that young heroines could not play the role of a mother. All these things made me more worried.
People said that I would be stupid if I said no to the film – Manisha
Meanwhile, Manisha met cinematographer Ashok Mehta, with whom she had worked in the film Saudagar. He told Manisha that she would be a fool if she rejected this offer.
Manisha told about this – During the meeting, Ashok Mehta asked me, son, what are you doing. Do you know what kind of filmmaker he is? Do you know what level of work he has done? Mani Ratnam's last film also proved to be a big hit.
These words of his shocked me. Then mother and I went to Chennai. Then I had a look test and photoshoot. After this I played the role of Shaila Bano in the film. Manisha further said that she is happy that she became a part of this film.
