In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Congress won 8 seats out of 13 Lok Sabha constituencies in Punjab. While BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal got two seats each. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won one seat. In 2020, the alliance between Shiromani Akali Dal and BJP ended. The Shiromani Akali Dal had announced its exit from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in opposition to the central government's Agrarian Act.
The Shiromani Akali Dal has supported 'One Nation, One Election' and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Due to this, there was a discussion in the political circles of Punjab that there will be an alliance between BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal again.
