According to police, Thirimane sustained minor injuries and was admitted to Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital. The accident took place around 7.45 am when Thirimane's car collided with a lorry coming in the opposite direction. According to Ada Derana, the car caught fire after a head-on collision with a lorry. In this accident, the truck driver and three other people in the car were injured and received treatment. The 21-year-old Thirimanne made his debut against India in 2010 and was a regular member of the Sri Lankan team for the next few years; But he didn't get a chance in the playing eleven every time. After the retirement of Tillakaratne Dilshan, Thirimane got an opportunity. He also led the team in few matches in the absence of Angelo Mathews. He announced his retirement in 2022. He scored 2,088 runs in 44 Tests with 3 centuries and 10 fifties, 3,194 runs in 127 ODIs.
