34 people died after drinking poisonous liquor in Kallakurichi, Tamil Nadu on Thursday (20th). Now the death toll in this case has gone up to 53 today (22nd). This information has been given by the Collector of Kallakurichi MS Prashant. Some people in Kallakuri had bought bottles of liquor from an illegal liquor vendor. So far 53 people have died after drinking alcohol while more than 80 people have been hospitalized.

The illegal liquor seller has been arrested by the police on Thursday (20). Liquor stock of 200 liters has been seized from the crime scene. Meanwhile, the opposition has put the Stalin government on edge over the matter. Opposition parties have demanded strict action against those involved in the death of innocent people.

10 lakh each to the families of the deceased

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Thursday announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each to those undergoing treatment. A one-member commission comprising former Justice B Gokuldas has announced to submit a report within 3 months to inquire into the matter.

The death toll may go up to 60

President of PMK Dr. Speaking to the media on Friday (21), Ambumani Ramadoss said, “So far 50 people have died and as a doctor, I think the death toll will rise to 60. I demand FIR against SP and Collector. On this issue of illegal liquor, we demand a CBI inquiry into the illegal liquor case of Kallakuri.”
