A bench of Justices Sanjeev Khanna and Dipankar Dutta granted bail to Kejriwal. Justice Khanna is the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Y. Chandrachud may become the next Chief Justice after his retirement.

His career as a lawyer

Justice Sanjeev Khanna is a close relative of Justice Hansraj Khanna. who had resigned as a judge of the Supreme Court during the emergency. take Khanna was born on 14 May 1960. He studied law from Delhi University. He started practice in the District Court of Delhi in 1983. After that he advocated in Delhi High Court, Tribunals. Before becoming a Supreme Court judge, Khanna was a judge of the Delhi High Court for 14 years from 2005.

He has acted as counsel in litigation related to direct taxation, arbitration and commercial matters, company laws, land laws, environmental and pollution laws and medical negligence. Also known as an expert in taxation and other commercial laws, Khanna has delivered various landmark judgments over the last two decades.

According to information on the website of the Supreme Court, “Justice. Khanna had argued several criminal cases in the Delhi High Court as Additional Public Prosecutor and was appointed by the court as amicus curiae.”

Meanwhile, he worked for about seven years as Senior Standing Counsel of the Income Tax Division of the Delhi High Court. In April 2024, Khanna delivered a judgment dismissing a plea for cross-verification of votes cast in Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) with Voter-Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT). “Everything cannot be doubted, petitioners need not criticize every aspect of 'EVM',” a bench of Justice Sanjeev Khanna also observed.
