Leader Online Desk : JNU Election Results : The left-wing All India Students Union has won the Jawaharlal Nehru University student union elections. AISU has won all the four posts of president, vice president, general secretary and joint secretary, defeating the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)-led Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad.
In this election held after four years, Dhananjay of All India Students Association (AISA) secured 2,598 votes and became the president of JNUSU. While ABVP's Umesh C Ajmira got only 1,676 votes. Dhananjay's victory marks the JNU Student Union's Dalit president after almost three decades of being a Left-backed group. He is originally from Bihar. Before him, Battilal Bairwa became the first Dalit President in 1996-97.
Left's Priyanshi Arya got 3307 votes while ABVP's Arjun Anand got 2309 votes for the post of general secretary. Leftist candidate Mohammad Sajid won the post of Joint Secretary by getting 2893 votes. While ABVP's Govind Dangi got 2496 votes.
More than seven and a half thousand students voted
Elections were held in JNU after almost four years. A record 73 percent voter turnout was recorded on March 22. This is the first time in the last 12 years that there has been such a turnout. Earlier in 2019, there was 67.9 percent voting. More than seven and a half thousand students voted in this year's election. 17 polling stations were set up for voting. A total of 19 candidates were in the fray for the JNUSU Central Panel. The central panel consisted of the President, Vice President, Joint Secretary and General Secretary. 42 people tried their luck for school counsellor. 8 candidates were fighting for the post of President.
