Recently, Javed Akhtar said in an interview to Mojo Story, I started drinking alcohol at the age of 20-21 and quit alcohol at the age of 42. I used to buy a bottle of liquor at that time and finish the entire bottle every night. This was a common thing for an Urdu poet. People used to believe that an Urdu poet has to live care-free and drink alcohol. I think this was wrong.
Javed Akhtar married Honey Irani in 1972. This marriage lasted for 13 years.
On the breakdown of his first marriage, Javed said, I am sure that if I had not been an alcoholic and had handled my responsibilities well, things would have been different. The battle to quit drinking is the reason for my failed relationship. She (Honey Irani) is a wonderful personality. She is a good person and I respect her a lot. This is why we are still friends today.
Javed Akhtar told that even after marrying Shabana, he remained under the influence of alcohol. But one day he realized that if he continued drinking like this, he would soon die. With this thought in mind, one day he decided to give up alcohol completely and from then till today he never drank even a drop of alcohol.
Javed Akhtar had a second marriage with Shabana Azmi. The couple has no children from this marriage.
