On 26 July 1982, Amitabh Bachchan had a tragic accident during the shooting of the film Coolie. Co-star Puneet Issar punched him hard during the shooting, due to which he fell on the table. He suffered internal injuries, due to which he was in the ICU for several days. During this time, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi also came to the hospital to meet him. Amitabh was in pain at that time, an incident related to which was shared by Jaya Bachchan's father Tarun Kumar Bhaduri in his article. According to him, Indira Gandhi also cried after seeing Amitabh in pain.
According to the article, when Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi reached the ICU to meet Amitabh Bachchan, Amitabh told them, “Aunty, I am in a lot of pain, I can't even sleep.” Hearing this, Indira Gandhi started crying. At this time, Rajiv Gandhi consoled her. After controlling herself, Indira Gandhi told Amitabh Bachchan, “It's okay son, I too can't sleep at times, but when I do, I feel relaxed. You will also fall asleep quickly, then there will be no pain.” After saying this, Indira Gandhi came out of the ward and asked for water to drink.

Tarun Bhaduri had mentioned in his article that after returning home from the hospital, Amitabh Bachchan had expressed his gratitude to all the countrymen. He had said, I will always remember this day. People across the country were conducting havan and puja for his well-being. In those days, articles were published in newspapers in which it was written that people should pray for Amitabh.

The doctors had given the answer, he was in coma
On 26 July 1982, Amitabh Bachchan was shooting an action sequence for the film Coolie in Bangalore. As per the demand of the shot, Puneet Issar had to punch Amitabh and he had to fall on the table. This was the job of a body double, but Amitabh shot it himself for perfection. The punch was so strong that a corner of the table hit Amitabh's stomach. There was no bleeding, but Big B was in a bad state due to the pain.

When he went to the hospital, the doctors could not understand the cause. Big B spent two days on painkillers, but when the pain did not stop, he was admitted to Bangalore's St. Philomena Hospital. An X-ray was done but the cause could still not be found. Many tests were done, but when the injury could not be diagnosed, how could it be treated?
On the third day, when the pain became unbearable, the doctors again did an X-ray and examined it closely. They saw that gas was visible under the diaphragm in the X-ray, which was a sign of leakage. Actually, due to the injury, Amitabh's intestines had ruptured and due to lack of timely treatment, the infection had spread. On the fourth day, renowned surgeon H.S. Bhatia saw Amitabh's case and suggested immediate surgery.
Before the operation, Amitabh had a fever of 102 and his heartbeat became 180 instead of 72. When the operation was done, it was seen that the intestines had burst from inside. It was difficult to survive even for 3-4 hours in such a condition, but he was struggling for 4 days. On the fourth day, Big B went into a coma. He underwent two operations and was kept in the hospital for two months.

Even before the accident, Amitabh Bachchan had liver problems and was also asthmatic. The very next day after the operation, he got pneumonia which worsened his condition. After treatment in Bangalore, he was brought to Mumbai by airbus. He was shifted to Breach Candy Hospital on a stretcher by a crane. He underwent another operation on 8 August. There was a crowd of his fans outside the hospital 24 hours a day. In the whole country, pujas were being performed at some places and yagnas at others. Jaya Bachchan herself had gone to Siddhi Vinayak for Amitabh's well-being, but when she reached there, she saw that many people were already praying for Big B before her. People's prayers were fruitful.
