We often watch reality shows on TV. Sometimes it comes to mind whether these reality shows are really real. What is shown on TV, is it really true? To know the answers to these questions, we reached Filmistan Studio in Goregaon, Mumbai.

The set of the reality show Dance Deewane was installed there. We spoke to the creative directors and some contestants there. During the conversation it was revealed that reality shows are not scripted, only some things are managed in advance.

The most interesting thing came out from the audience. In reality shows, the audience is invited by paying money. Rs 500 to 1000 are given per person. They have to sit at one place and watch the entire show for 12 hours.

We talked about these points in the new episode of Reel to Real..

  • How to coordinate with the audience sitting in reality shows?
  • How much money do celebrities charge sitting on the judge's chair?
  • How much money do anchors and hosts take?
  • What is the process of selection of contestants?
  • What is the budget of a reality show?

Shooting takes place only one day every week, two episodes are completed in a day.
Arvind, creative director of Dance Deewane, said, 'The shooting of the show takes place only one day every week. Two episodes are shot in a day. Shifts of 12 hours are imposed in a day. From the judge to the audience, one has to give 12 hours of non-stop time without going anywhere. There is a short lunch time in between. The production team always tries to shoot one episode before lunch and one episode after lunch.

The audience is invited by paying money
Many questions arise regarding the audience of reality shows. Are these ordinary people, or are they called after paying money? Arvind replied to this also. He said, 'The audience is invited. These are not ordinary people. They also have an association. There are many people in the audience who have been attending some show or the other as spectators for the last 10 years. About 70 people sit as guests in our show. Rs 500 to 1000 are given to a person for sitting in the audience.

You must be feeling after reading here that the job of the audience is very good, they are getting paid and also getting to see the performance of celebs and talented contestants. However, there is another side to this also. Sitting at one place for 12 hours is a difficult task in itself. Their activity starts decreasing and they start getting tired. In such a situation, the audience coordinator comes and appeals to them to become active again.

They go to big cities and select contestants.
The biggest question is that how are the contestants selected? Dance Deewane's creative director Arvind also replied, 'We go to every big city of the country and search for contestants from there. We select 100 people, out of which 30 are removed. In the end, 70 contestants are left who are brought before the judge.

Apart from this, we contact many dance coordinators and those running dancing schools. We tell them our demands and what kind of contestant we want. Those who express their desire to join the show are first asked to submit a dance video. After this they are physically met. If the person in front understands, then we invite him to the show.

The creative team travels from city to city to select candidates.
Arvind said that he completes all the auditions in a city in just one day. Meaning, the candidates of the city where they have to go are informed in advance. The production team decides on a place and sets up a camp there. All the candidates go there and give audition, those who are selected are invited to come to Mumbai.

On one hand, the creative team travels from city to city to select candidates, while on the other hand, the production team keeps preparing the sets in Mumbai. Both tasks continue to happen simultaneously. It takes 22 to 25 days to make the set. Same number of days are taken to select the candidates. Overall, the shooting of the show starts within two months.

17 cameras are installed around the stage
How many cameras are required to show such a big show on TV from every angle? Arvind said, '17 cameras are used. Two to three cameras are used keeping the judges in the centre. Apart from this, two cameras are used to show the contestant's family members. 4 cameras are installed on the stage. Two cameras are also installed to show the performance of the contestants.

Heavy cameras are used on the sets. There is a professional team to handle these also.

You must have seen that sometimes tributes are given to celebrities in reality shows. Some private pictures are also used in the background. If the actor's family wants, they can also charge money from the production houses for those pictures.

No cuts or retakes in between performances
Once the contestants start dancing, they do it till the end without any cuts. Don't stop in between. It is not that if you forget the step then you have to start again. Once the performance starts, it ends after just two or three minutes.

The creative team gives the list of songs to the contestants. One has to choose one of these songs and give a performance. Song selection plays a big role in dance reality shows. The creative team makes sure that the songs are well chosen so that the audience enjoys both listening and watching. If the songs are boring then it directly impacts the TRP of the show.

If costumes do not match, they are changed overnight
A lot of attention is also paid to the contestant's costume. On Sunday, the day before the actual shooting, all the contestants are asked to dance in their costumes. If it seems that a particular contestant's costume is not matching the song or the lighting of the show, then it is changed overnight.

Hotel arrangements are made for the contestants to stay
Proper accommodation and food arrangements are made for the contestants by the production house. A contestant present on the set said, 'The production house takes care of every basic feature of ours. There is a hotel for our stay, we can stay there as per our wish. Laundry is also available for washing clothes. Apart from this, there is 24-hour medical facility.
