Late Sushant Singh Rajput was in the lead role in the film Kedarnath.
First watch these two scenes..
The first scene was shot on real locations, but the rain seen in the second scene was created with the help of pumps and fountains. Similarly, the flood scene in the film Kedarnath was also shot in a small pond of Film City.
Actually, flood and storm scenes in films cannot be shot at real locations. In such a situation, a set is made, in which air is blown with the help of a machine and rain is made with the help of a pump. Later the scenes are completed with the help of sound and VFX.
In this episode of Reel to Real, we will know how natural disaster scenes are shot in films. For this, we talked to filmmaker Karan Kapadia, miniature artist Sarvesh Pawar, cinematographer Tushar Kanti Ray and VFX editor Upanshu Singh.
How are earthquake scenes filmed? First of all let us know how the earthquake scene is filmed. Before filming the earthquake scene, first of all the director and the production team together decide how the effect of the earthquake is to be shown. For this, the entire team does research on incidents caused by earthquakes like collapse of buildings, spreading of debris, etc. During this, help is also taken from VFX specialist, so that the effect of earthquake can be shown correctly.
Small models of buildings are made on the set for the earthquake scene. These models look like real buildings. After this, vibrators are used on the set to show the effects of the earthquake. As soon as the shooting starts, the vibrators start working. Buildings shake, giving the audience the experience of an earthquake. Additionally, small grains (particles of soil) are used to add dust and debris effects, making the scene look more realistic.
During shooting, the camera shoots from multiple angles. In this process, smoke making machines are used to show smoke. Apart from this, the scene is made even more dramatic by adding effects like shouting sounds or explosion sounds in the background. After shooting, the remaining work is completed with the help of computer graphics.
During the shooting of the film Ravana, Aishwarya-Abhishek used to stay in water for 14-15 hours. Karan Kapadia worked in the film Raavan. Scenes involving river, pond and rain were shot in this film. Regarding the experience of this film, Karan told that its shooting was very dangerous. Almost all the shooting of the film has been done on live locations. Most of the scenes had to be shot in the forest. The entire team had to stay in water for 14-15 hours.
We have seen many scenes in the film Ravana, in which rain is shown. Karan told that some of these scenes were shot in real rain. At the same time, artificial rain setup was prepared for some scenes.
Water is sprayed from pumps for flood scenes. All flood scenes shown in films are fake. Their shooting is not done on a real location, but on a prepared set. First of all, a set is prepared, on which things like houses, roads and trees are made. All these models are small in size, but look absolutely real.
Then small pumps are installed on the set, which are used to spray water. The water level is increased or decreased depending on the scene. To show tsunami, big pumps are used, which throw water rapidly like ocean waves. After the shooting is over, sound effects are created with the help of computer graphics.
We have seen many such scenes in films, in which forests catch fire and the entire village gets burnt. Actually, in such cases, some scenes are shot in real locations like forests, while sometimes many such spots have been made in the film city also, where fire scenes can be shot.
However, to shoot in real locations like forests, permission has to be taken. Shooting starts here only after taking permission from the Forest Department. It is not possible to shoot here without permission. At the same time, for shooting scenes involving fire, permission has to be taken from the fire department.
A team of ambulance and doctors are always present on the set. Karan told that when scenes like flood, fire and earthquake are shot, an ambulance and a team of doctors are always present on the set for the safety of the actors.
How and why are miniatures made? Let us understand the planning and process of miniature models with an example. For example, first of all, the film's director and a miniature expert had together decided how to show the scene of the sinking of the Titanic. It was not possible to sink the real ship in water, so smaller models were designed.
A large model of the real ship and several smaller models were made of Titanic. Small details were also made in miniature models, such as the ship's rooms, stairs and the effect of sea waves were also taken into account.
When these miniature models were ready, they were placed in water and filmed. To show the effect of the ship sinking, small motors and small machines were installed, which slowly tilt the ship, causing it to sink in water. At this time, special lights and cameras were used, so that everything seemed real and the audience could really feel the situation.
VFX and computer graphics were added to the filmed scenes to make the sinking of the ship and the effects of sea waves look real. Miniature technology was used in the Titanic scene because it would have been very difficult and expensive to do all this on a real scale.
Flood scenes are shot in a small pond The role of miniature models increases a lot in the shooting of flood scenes. Actually, shooting such scenes at real locations is not possible. For this reason, a small pond is made and the entire scene is shot in it. Then the rest of the work is done with the help of special effects.
Miniature models are made in less time and less budget Sarvesh Pawar told that the budget of shooting with miniature models is much less than shooting at real locations. However, very little time is available from the production team for making miniature models. Sometimes we get only 7 days.
Underwater scenes in the film Kedarnath were shot in the swimming pool. Tushar Kanti Ray worked as a cinematographer in the film Kedarnath. Flood and storm scenes were also shot in this film. Regarding its making, Tushar said, 'We shot the temple scene in the film at a real location. The flood scene was shot in Film City. A pond has been built in the film city, where scenes related to water can be easily shot. There are also underwater scenes in the film Kedarnath. These scenes were shot in a swimming pool.
This scene of the film Kedarnath was shot in a swimming pool.
In films, air is thrown from a machine for storm scenes. Even the storms shown in movies are fake. To prepare the setup of the storm, the director and the production team first decide what the storm will be like, how strong the wind will blow, how heavy the rain will be. Then the set is ready, on which houses, trees and plants are all there. To create the look of strong wind, wind generating machines are installed.
When heavy rain is to be produced along with wind, sprinklers or hoses (a long hose used to convey water from one place to another) are used. Sometimes, to further enhance the effect of rain, water is also dropped from above.
Then after the shooting, the sound engineer records the sounds of lightning, wind and rain and puts them in the scene. Besides, computer graphics are also used to give a complete look to the scene.
It is impossible to create flood and storm scenes without VFX. Upanshu Singh told that VFX plays an important role in shooting natural disaster scenes. Like earthquake cannot be shot at real location. For this reason, VFX is used to make the scene realistic.
