In an interview with Bharti S Pradhan, Hema had said that she had said yes to 'Baghban' on the insistence of her mother.

Hema said, before the muhurat of 'Baghban', BR Chopra met me and said that he wanted to cast me in the film. He told me the story and I will say that the film did so well only because of his blessings. Till date people talk about this film. I remember I was listening to the story of the film from Ravi Chopra, my mother was also sitting with me. When he left, I said, they are asking me to play the role of the mother of four such big boys. How can I do this?

Hema further said- 'Before doing this film, I felt that I had not done any film for a long time. I was going to work in films after a long time. So I thought- why should I start with this film? But mother said- no, you have to do this film. Your character in this is very good. She kept pestering me, due to which I had to agree to work in the film.

In 'Baghban', Hema played the role of mother of Aman Verma, Sameer Soni, Nasir Khan and Sahil Chaddha. Salman Khan played her adopted son in the film.
