Study from 2003 to 2020
Researchers have studied cities across the country that expanded between 2003 and 2020. In this, the night time temperature of the soil in the cities was measured. For this, temperature data has been collected using MODIS Aqua satellite. Also, the heat radiation of the ground surface at night has been measured (Heat Cities in India) in this study.
A Comparative Study of Urbanization and Non-Urbanization
Warming trends in expanding cities were compared to non-urbanized areas. The researchers found that some cities are warming due to regional climate change. Compared to this, the rate of increase in temperature was found to be highest in urbanized cities.
Increase in night temperature by 0.53 degrees Celsius
Almost all of the urban cities studied showed an increase in nighttime land surface temperatures. This increase has been shown to average 0.53 degrees Celsius per decade. In this study, the cities of East and Central India have played a major role in increasing the country's temperature.
