Govinda, a famous actor of the 80s-90s, is known for his comedy films. However, there was a time when Govinda retired from comedy films, calling his own films B-grade.

Announcing his retirement from comedy films in 2003, Govinda had told Rediff, “My films are always considered a total time pass or B-grade. They are never called good films. Even if my films do well, they never get critical acclaim. I used to get nominations in the Best Actor category, but I never won. Then the category was renamed Best Actor in a Comic Role. I tried to fight the situation, but then I thought why should I fight, so I decided to change.”

He further said, from now on I will not do comedy films. Even if I do, the script should be fresh and new. I don't like the same type of writing. My career track record is good from Ek aur Ek Gyarah Tak. It does not matter whether I am more successful or less. What is important is success. I should not spoil my name. This is the right time to get out of this.

On the selection of films, Govinda had said, I want good cinema. There should be quality writing and good directors. But there is no such thing as a dream role for me. If I had something specific in mind, I would not have given others a chance to bring out the best qualities in me.

Let us tell you that by the end of the 90s, Govinda's fan following had decreased due to the arrival of new heroes. After the year 2003, Govinda started getting very few films. Later, he appeared in multi-starrer films like Bhagam Bhag, Partner, Salaam-e-Ishq, Money Hai To Honey Hai, Life Partner, Kill Dil.

Govinda's last film was Rangeela Raja in 2019, in which he played a double role. This film was a flop at the box office.
