Filmmaker Kiran Rao was the assistant director in the film 'Lagaan' released in 2001. She and Aamir Khan first met on the sets of the film 'Lagaan'.
When Kiran met Aamir for the first time, the actor was not divorced from Reena Dutta. However, Aamir and Reena divorced in 2002, a year after the release of 'Lagaan'.
In such a situation, many people considered Kiran to be the reason behind the divorce of Aamir and Reena. Now Kiran has given clarification on this matter in an interview.

Aamir and I came closer during the shooting of 'Swades': Kiran
Kiran told that during the shooting of 'Lagaan' she hardly talked to Aamir. In an interview given to Zoom, Kiran said, 'Many people think that Aamir and I connected during 'Lagaan' but it was not so. We both came close during the shooting of 'Swades'. At that time Aamir was shooting for 'Mangal Pandey'. Then we shot some ads with Ashutosh Gowarikar.
'We rarely talked on the sets of Lagaan'
Kiran further said, 'Before that, after 3 years of Lagaan, we were not in touch. Even during the shooting of Lagaan, we hardly talked. But when we started meeting publicly in 2004, people thought that I was the reason for their divorce, whereas it was not so.
Kiran has a good bonding with everyone in Aamir's family including Reena.
'Aamir and Kiran also took couple counselling'
In this interview, Kiran told that Aamir and she had also taken couple counselling. He said- 'When you marry someone who has been in another relationship before, a baggage comes with it, which can spoil your relationship too. For this I believe in couple counselling. Aamir and I also did couple counselling.
Aamir-Kiran's marriage took place in 2005
Aamir and Kiran got married in the year 2005 and both separated from each other in 2021. However, the two still work together, are great friends and are also co-parenting their son Azad.
Aamir and Kiran have recently worked together on the film 'Lapata Ladies'.
Aamir is working on three films simultaneously
On the work front, Kiran has made a comeback as a director after 13 years with the recently released film 'Laapta Ladies'. Aamir had produced this film. Aamir's last film on the acting front was 'Lal Singh Chaddha'. These days he is working on three films. Where he is producing Sunny Deol starrer 'Lahore 1947' and his son Junaid's debut romantic film 'Ek Din'. His next film as an actor is 'Sitaare Zameen Par'.
