EC takes cognizance of complaints against PM Modi, Rahul Gandhi, seeks reply by April 29









Leader Online Desk: The Central Election Commission has taken cognizance of the complaints filed against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi regarding violation of the model code of conduct. The BJP and the Congress had accused each other of creating hatred and division on the basis of religion, caste, community or language. In this matter, the Election Commission has asked for a reply by 11 am on 29 April.

The Election Commission has made it clear that it holds party presidents accountable as a first step to reign in political star campaigners. BJP president JP Nadda and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge have been issued notices in connection with allegations of violation of code of conduct against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi. A reply has been sought in this matter by 11 am on 29th April.

Political parties have to take primary responsibility for the behavior of their candidates, especially star campaigners. The Election Commission has also clarified that campaign speeches by people in higher positions have more serious implications.
