Most of these political prisoners were members of the leftist and opposition group Mujahideen-e-Khalka (MEK) or the People's Mujahideen Organization of Iran (PMOI). The total number of political prisoners executed by these tribunals is unknown, but human rights groups say they include approximately 5,000 men and women. Raisi, however, has consistently denied his role in the case, but has maintained that the punishment was “appropriate” in accordance with the fatwa of Iran's former supreme leader, Ayatollah Khomeini.
