Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim acquitted in murder case









Leader Online Desk: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has acquitted self-proclaimed spiritualist and Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and four others in the much talked about Ranjit Singh murder case in Haryana. In this case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) convicted Ram Rahim and sentenced him to life imprisonment. He had filed a petition in the High Court against this sentence. Meanwhile, Ram Rahim Singh has been sentenced to 20 years in the Sadhvi sexual abuse case. Currently, Ram Rahim is lodged in Rohtak's Sunaria Jail.

Who was Ranjit Singh?

Ranjit Singh hails from Kurukshetra in Haryana. He was the manager of Sirsa Dera Sacha Sauda. He was shot dead on July 10, 2002. An anonymous Sadhvi wrote a letter to the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The letter demanded an inquiry into Ram Rahim. The Dera management suspected that Ranjit Singh had forced him to write this anonymous letter. This anonymous letter was published by Ramchandra Chhatrapati, a journalist from Sirsa, in his daily 'Pura Sach'. After this on October 24, 2002, journalist Ramchandra Chhatrapati was also shot. He was seriously injured. He also died on 21 November 2002 while undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital in Delhi.

The CBI court had sentenced him to life imprisonment

Ranjit Singh's son Jagsir Singh filed a petition in the Haryana High Court in January 2003 demanding that the investigation into the murder case be handed over to the CBI. As per the order of the High Court, the investigation was handed over to the CBI. While investigating the case, the CBI registered a case against five persons including Ram Rahim. In 2007, the court framed the charges against the accused in the murder case. After the investigation was handed over to the CBI in 2003, the name of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh came to light in 2006 based on the statement of Ram Rahim's driver Khatta Singh. In 2021, the CBI court sentenced five convicts including Gurmeet Ram Rahim to life imprisonment.
