Demand to ban Kandahar hijack series from Delhi High Court: Petitioner said- Hindu names of terrorists were mentioned in it, this hurt religious sentiments

IC 814 releases on Netflix on August 29.

A PIL was filed in the Delhi High Court on Monday demanding a ban on the OTT series 'IC-814: The Kandahar Hijack'. The petitioner accused the filmmaker of distorting facts.

This petition has been filed by Hindu Sena president Surjeet Singh Yadav. He said that the terrorists have been shown with Hindu names in the series, which include other names of Lord Shiva like 'Bhola' and 'Shankar'. Whereas their real names were something else. The petition states that this has hurt the sentiments of the Hindu community.

On the other hand, after the controversy over the OTT series IC 814 based on the 1999 Kandahar hijack, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has sought a reply from Netflix on Monday. The ministry has sent a summon to Monica Shergill, content head of Netflix India, and asked her to be present on Tuesday i.e. 3 September.

The ministry said that the India content head should respond to the controversial aspects of the series. On August 29, the IC 814 series was released on Netflix which is based on the Kandahar plane hijacking.

What is the whole matter?
The names of the terrorists who hijackered this plane were Ibrahim Akhtar, Shahid Akhtar, Sunny Ahmed, Zahoor Mistry and Shakir, but their names have been changed in the web series. The names of these terrorists have been changed to Bhola and Shankar. After this, there is a demand to boycott it on social media.

BJP had said- Leftist agenda to hide wrongdoings

After the release of the series, BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya had recently raised objections to its content. He had criticised the series director Anubhav Sinha on social media platform X.

He had said that Anubhav resorted to the agenda of the leftists to hide his wrongdoing. The hijackers of IC-814 were dreaded terrorists. They had adopted fictitious names to hide their Muslim identity.

What is the story of the series?
The story of this series is based on a true incident of 24 December 1999. When five terrorists hijacked Indian Airlines flight IC 814 while flying from Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport to New Delhi. In which 176 passengers were travelling.

This series stars actors like Dia Mirza, Naseeruddin Shah, Vijay Verma and Pankaj Kapoor.

The terrorists take the plane to Kandahar via Amritsar, Lahore, Dubai. The passengers were held hostage for seven days. What happens to the passengers inside the plane during this time. What happens to their families. What conditions are put before the government to release these passengers. All this is shown in this series.
