The film Aandhi was banned in 1975
Earlier, in 1975, the film Aandhi was banned by the Indira Gandhi government during the Emergency. The film was released shortly before the Emergency, which caused sleepless nights for the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Congress leaders. The film was accused of tarnishing the image of the Congress party. After the film was banned, lead actress Suchitra Sen never appeared in any Hindi film.
There were rumours that the film was based on Indira Gandhi's relationship with her ex-husband, but the truth was that Suchitra Sen played the role of Aarti Devi, whose look was inspired by Indira Gandhi. It was later released in 1977 after the Janata Party came to power.
