Leaders Online: Before the Lok Sabha elections (2024 Lok Sabha elections), Congress has suffered a big blow. The Income Tax Department has issued a notice to the Congress for Rs 1,700 crore. The Congress claimed that the notice came hours after the Delhi High Court dismissed a plea challenging the revaluation process for four assessment years.

Congress lawyer and Rajya Sabha MP Vivek Tankha has confirmed that the party has received a notice from the Income Tax Department. He has said that he will file a legal challenge against the Income Tax Department saying that this action is unfair. Tankha also alleged that the notice of the new Income Tax Department worth around Rs 1,700 crore was given to the Congress without the main documents. “We were served demand notices without assessment orders. He has also alleged that Congress is being financially strangled during the Lok Sabha elections.

The Income Tax department has recovered Rs 135 crore as tax arrears and interest from the Congress bank accounts in Delhi for the assessment year 2018-19.

The Delhi High Court has dismissed Congress' pleas challenging the income tax department's reassessment process. A bench of justices Yashwant Verma and Purushendra Kumar Kaurav dismissed the petition, which came as a shock to the Congress.
